At 34 years old, Mamdani will be the youngest New York City mayor in a century and will become the first Muslim and first Asian American mayor of NYC. A member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, he has served as a member of the New York State Assembly from the 36th district since 2021, representing the Queens neighborhood of Astoria.
Mamdani was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to New York City with his family at the age of seven. A graduate of the NYC Public School System, he attended the Bronx High School of Science and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. In 2018, he became naturalized as an American citizen.
